Electricity

Industrial Revolution

–          “The use of new energy sources, including both fuels and motive power, such as coal, the steam engine, electricity, petroleum, and the internal-combustion engine, the invention of new machines, such as the spinning jenny and the power loom that permitted increased production with a smaller expenditure of human energy.” This use of new energy sources caused cities to become modernized and it began a trend of inventing.

Michael Faraday- “studied electricity and its relation to magnetism. Using his knowledge, he was able to generate electricity by moving a magnet through a coil of wires.”

Inventions: Continuous rotation by use of electric current, electric motors, the voltameter (device for measuring electrical charges), electromagnetic induction (1831).

“In 1834 he announced his famous two laws of electrolysis. Briefly, they state that for any given amount of electrical force in an electrochemical cell, chemical substances are released at the electrodes in the ratio of their chemical equivalents.”

Thomas Savery– Invented the steam engine (1698), which was later improved by Thomas Newcomen and James Watt.

“The impact of the steam engine cannot be over-stated–it belongs with the printing press, electric power, telegraphy and the telephone, and lately, the computer, as inventions that have exerted a dramatic and far-ranging influence on civilization.”

George Stephenson– Responsible for developing the steam-powered locomotive called the “Blutcher” (1814) leading to much advancement on the railroad industry.

Werner von Siemens– Invented the first dynamo, which made possible the production of great amounts of electrical energy (1866).

“The first electrical power stations started up in 1881. By the end of the century, electric streetlights made it easier to find one’s way around town at night, and electric tramways could be found in a number of cities.”

Thomas Edison– Invented the first incandescent electric lap (1879) and the first central electric power plant in 1882.

Robert Fulton- invented first regular and commercially successful steamboat (1807).

Guglielmo Marconi- invented first wireless telegraph (1896) making long distance communication possible.

Marconiphone

Alexander Graham Bell- perfected the telephone to transmit vocal messages by electricity (1876).
