Big Changes!

If you come into the Irwin Library today, you’ll see some big changes in progress!  For the first time in 50 years our circulation desk is moving, and we couldn’t be more excited!  Starting this fall we will be doing a combined circulation/reference desk that will allow us to provide a higher level of service to all of our patrons. Highly trained students from our Information Commons program will be staffing this new combined desk, and referring more in depth reference questions to liaison librarians. This is based on models that more and more libraries around the nation are moving to that use student staffed service points and peer-to-peer mentoring. The old circulation area will become a new student study space. We are also adding new technology based collaborative work spaces for students and staff.

Here is our old circulation desk:

Here is the empty space before the desk was moved (you may recognize this as the space where music reference was housed – if you are looking for this, it is now on the second floor with the rest of the music materials):

And here is the desk in place, almost ready to go!

Our library webpage (www.butler.edu/library) now has a new catalog! Learn more about our new system, WorldCat Discovery, here.

If you know WorldCat, you’re going to love WorldCat Discovery!

What It Is: A search that allows you to discover items in our collections and beyond.

What It Searches: Books, ebooks, articles, media, and more.
– All items physically located within the library (just like the classic Catalog)
– Content from 45 of our most popular databases – Articles, E-books, and Streaming Media
– Items from other libraries worldwide that you can request through Interlibrary Loan

Top Features:
– Options on the left allow you to limit your search by format, author, date, and more
– Much more seamless process to request an item through interlibrary loan
– Log in with your Butler username/password to create and save lists
– If you’ve used Worldcat.org in the past, you will now be forwarded to Butler’s customized version when on campus

Tree of Hope – Lupus Awareness Month

By , May 16, 2014 1:49 pm

The Irwin Library has a new visiting piece of art in recognition of Lupus Awareness Month. Please stop by and see the “Tree of Hope”, which is on display in the atrium of the Irwin Library for the next two weeks.  The tree was designed by Jason Wright “The Funkey Junkmeister“, a disabled veteran from Laconia, IN.   He used scrap metal to create the tree and guests are invited to to place butterflies on the tree with names or messages of hope for lupus patients.  Gold butterflies honor those who have passed away from the disease.

The tree will be traveling to all 50 states, but we are pleased to have it here in Indiana right now, as yesterday, May 15th, Governor Pence signed signed a proclamation in recognition of Lupus Awareness Month.
