The Big East Women’s Basketball tournament gets underway from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut on Friday, March 8th at 11 A.M. Eastern. Lets dive into the first round matchups.
Let’s take a look at the first matchup, the 8 seed Butler Bulldogs (14-15, 6-12 BE) vs the 9 seed Providence Friars (12-19, 6-12 BE). These two teams split the season series, each team winning on the road. Providence beat Butler 63 to 53 at Hinkle Fieldhouse on January 21. Butler returned the favor by beating Providence 55 to 48 at Alumni Hall on February 14.
The second matchup of the first round is the 7 seed Seton Hall Pirates (16-13, 8-10 BE) vs. the 10 seed Depaul Blue Demons (12-19, 4-14 BE). These two teams only played once during the regular season with Seton Hall winning by a final score of 91 to 78 on February 17 at Walsh Gymnasium. The winner of this game will play the 2 Seed Creighton Bluejays (24-4, 15-3 BE) at 7 PM on Saturday, March 9 on FS2.
The last matchup of the first round is the 6 Seed Georgetown Hoyas (19-10, 9-9 BE) vs the 11 seed Xavier Musketeers (1-26, 0-18 BE). Georgetown swept the season series, Georgetown beat Xavier 77 to 49 on January 20 at McDonough Arena. Georgetown also beat Xavier 66 to 46 on March 2 at Cintas Center. The winner of this game will play the 3 seed St. John’s Red Storm (17-13, 11-7 BE) at around 9:30 PM on March 9 on FS2.
The team to watch out for in this tournament is the Uconn Huskies who went 18 and 0 in conference play during the regular season and are ranked ninth in this week’s AP women’s poll. Uconn won their conference games by an average of 31.1 points per game and have won their 26 games by an average of 23.7 points per game which ranks them 4th in the country in scoring margin.
