Group of Bulldogs celebrate a Matye Riley goal (3) against Marquette.

The Butler Women’s Lacrosse team recently crossed the midway point in their season that has strayed from expectations.

Having started the season 0-7 with Saturday’s loss to Marquette opening conference play, the squad has been able to reflect on their performances, especially against the Golden Eagles who have outscored opponents 40-15 in their past two matches.

“As the season goes on we continue to build on these takeaways and are looking to constantly improve”, senior attacker Paris Alexander said. “I’m really proud of the girls for focusing on the movement they took to get those shots off. Again, it’s a huge improvement to me on the offensive end that we went from not being able to get looks or shots off at all and now we are able to create something.”

Junior Elise Latham has led Butler with 14 goals at the midway point, the sole Bulldog in double figures so far. Joining her is freshman Maggie Lewis with eight scores, Makenna Evans with five, and a cluster of players with four goals. Goalkeeper Alyssa Lentz leads the way with 20 ground balls, followed by freshman defender Olivia DiCarlo (11) and a senior defensive duo of Grace Hensley (11) and Tessa Fackrell (10).

The Dawgs have entered conference play that features five of the top fifty ranked teams in D1 Lacrosse and a collective 31-24 record. With a tough schedule ahead  and six primary freshman starters, experience has been and will continue to be crucial for the growth of the team as they gear up for the road ahead.

“I’m really looking forward to having the chance to compete against such competitive teams in the Big East”, Alexander said, “It’s extremely beneficial for the younger players on our team to also get this experience playing these highly competitive teams so they can carry that with them after the senior class leaves and use that game knowledge for the future teams”.

Butler will head to Pennsylvania to face off against Villanova on Saturday before a two week April home stretch against Connecticut and UC Davis.
