The DTC logo features the African baobab tree, which is one of Africa’s most powerful symbols. This was chosen to represent the DTC because it symbolizes wisdom as mature trees are centuries old; it can be seen can be seen from afar, inspiring hope for the one who travels toward it as there is always human life close to it; it is a gathering place for the community for celebration, mourning, and to discuss matters of importance (the “indaba” or “lekgotla”) and thus symbolizes a place for reconciliation and justice. It provides shade for the weary traveler, and because it is so big all who travel to it can take cover in its shade, making it a true landmark of life. It represents a spirit of togetherness. Theologian Wangari Maathai of Kenya refers to this tree planting seeds that will become a canopy under which the hope for the future will grow. There is a saying in Africa that truth is like a baobab tree: it takes many arms to link around it.
