Butler Alum Kristin Hess speaks at 2013 JCA Convocation

Kristin Hess (’10) is Communications and Program Officer at Indiana Humanities, where she is not only responsible for visual communication, but also the creation of statewide programs, such as the award-winning Food for Thought program. Kristin sets an excellent example for current students, both in terms of her creativity, highlighted in the photographs in her first book, Food for Thought: An Indiana Harvest, and in her community involvement and service–she serves on the boards of both the Center for Urban Ecology and Growing Places Indy and is the project manager for Velocity, Indianapolis Downtown Inc.’s strategic action plan for downtown Indianapolis.

During her presentation, Kristin gave current Butler students 10 pieces of advice:

  • Engage in the things that move you.
  • Make your world work for you – no waiting around.
  • Pay attention to when something is missing.
  • Don’t sacrifice what’s best for what is expected.
  • Engage and participate in your community. Indianapolis is a cool place.
  • Recognize and utilize the fact that you have amazing professors.
  • Everything leads to somethings else. Embrace the gray and take some risks.
  • Silos are boring – embrace your abilities to affect change (in any situation)
  • Get moving! Meeting expectations is the baseline. Exceed expectations.
  • Make a difference.
