Our Depiction class allows students to study a combination of Illustration and Book Arts, focusing on sequential art forms including the creation of graphic novels, comic strips, storyboards, and children’s books.
At this point in the semester we’re focusing on traditional methods – particularly laying out projects in pencil and then using ink on bristol board to make finished pieces. As we go along, we’ll escalate to using programs like Manga Illustrator to add color and texture, creating digital works and printed books.
The projects below are self-portraits. Students were asked to create an artwork that tells about themselves, but the self-portrait didn’t necessarily have to literally depict the author physically. The works below show a diverse set of responses and a wide range of voices from our students, which is really exciting.
