Last week students in Structure: Graphic Design did a calligraphy workshop with Indianapolis-based calligraphy expert- Erika Woods. The study of typography is greatly enhanced by a study of classical letterforms and various calligraphy styles: Uncial, Copperplate and Blackletter amongst others. Students got a sense of the discipline necessary to excel in this art form as well as it’s beauty. Their subsequent project was to do two pieces of lettering- one digital and one hand-made.
