Investigations of Shape and Color Theory

Students in Introduction to Visual Art were introduced to some of the basics of color theory:

  • the color wheel
  • the relativity of color
  • complementary colors
  • color temperature
  • saturation

We also discussed shape and the role of geometric and amorphous shapes in creating balance and harmony in painting. Students were then asked to explore these properties in the context of a painting that they designed and created. The studio views below show students painting, mixing color and demonstrate the rather beautiful and extravagant palettes that proper color mixing can achieve.
