Glee’s Tragic Loss

By Lauren Brice

Posted 24th July 2013

On July 13 Glee fans from all around the globe were shocked when star of the show, Cory Monteith was found dead in his Vancouver hotel room at age 31. When Monteith was late to check out on the Saturday, staff went to his room where they found his body. The young actor’s death was caused by a toxic mix of alcohol and heroin.

Monteith’s parents divorced when he was young, leading him to substance abuse, theft and dropping out of school at 16. When he was 19 he went to rehab and then began his acting career. After an intervention from members of the Glee cast and crew Monteith checked himself into rehab in April of this year to battle his substance abuse issues.

Monteith’s girlfriend and co-star Lea Michelle has made the decision to postpone the return of Glee by only one week. Originally set to air on the 19th of September, the new season will now be premiering on the 26th, however, this date may be subject to change as writers are facing the challenge of addressing the absence of Monteith’s character Finn Hudson.

Jonas Brothers Concert

1001138_10151677940431878_1520527404_nAs a 12 year old I had one love, one favorite band, one major crush; on the Jonas Brothers. Soon after turning 13 I out grew the band, starting listening to more ‘grown up’ music and avoiding anything Disney related. 6 years later, having not listened to their music for years, kept up with their lives or even given them a thought, I ended up at their concert in the Klipsch music center. Seeing that they were performing in Indiana a mere week after my arrival there it felt like fate and all of the feelings I had for them as a 12 year old came rushing back.

I convinced my friends to come with me, despite a few of them being very reluctant and refusing to tell anyone they were going. As my 12 year old crush was not worth the $100 tickets for the front row we settled for $24 tickets that didn’t even include seats… just a spot on the grass. I was a little hesitant after looking at the map and seeing how far away from the stage we were… how was Nick going to fall in love with me if I was that far away?

1001876_10151672042971878_1657017409_nUpon arriving at the Klipsch music center we were all very excited to see that the grass wasn’t as far away as we’d thought and that we wouldn’t need a telescope to see the stage. After sitting on the grass for less than 10 minutes we spotted a man giving away tickets and managed to score tickets in the seventh row – closer than the VIP tickets!

Following the seat change was one of the greatest concert experiences of my life. Despite not having listened to any of their songs for many years I remembered all of the words and felt like a 12 year old again. Fulfilling past-Lauren’s dream was a great thing and though I may never listen to their music again it will remain one of my favorite nights in Indiana.

Vans Warped TourWhile I was visiting Indianapolis for our short course at Butler University, I was lucky enough to attend the Vans Warped Tour.Vans Warped Tour is a touring music festival which is usually a showcase for punk rock music but over the years extended its genre and has become more diverse.

The day started at 11am and went until 9pm, although it was a very hot day Laura, Lauren, Rachel and I managed to stick it out till the very end. I got to see heaps of bands perform, some I had seen before and a lot of bands I hadn’t seen or hadn’t heard of till the day.

vans 2A few of my favorite bands also played, and I even got to meet them afterwards and was able to get photos with a few of the band members. Being Australian seemed to be an advantage on the day, as people were interested in talking to me to find out what I was doing at warped tour in America. My favorite band The Amity Affliction are also Australian so we got to have a chat about things, it was nice to hear a familiar accent.
