Editor’s Note: The IPS/Butler Lab School will soon start the hiring process for the 2014–2015 school year. There are several opportunities available, and we are actively seeking both new and experienced teachers who are ready to be part of this dynamic education community. The school is inspired by the practices of Reggio Emilia, but the most important attribute for teachers who apply is a commitment to inquiry-based pedagogy.
If you are interested in learning more or being on the list to receive an application, contact Lab School Principal Ron Smith. There will also be an Educator Open House on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, from 5:00–7:00 p.m. at the school.
The following shares a teacher’s perspective on becoming a Lab School Teacher…
In 2010, I was at home getting my Master’s degree and taking care of my beautiful newborn daughter. Ron Smith, director of the now IPS/Butler University Laboratory School got in touch with me and began talking with me about the new Lab School opening up in the fall of 2011. As he and I were talking it was apparent that I had to pursue this dream of mine. It was an easy decision to apply because it was a dream come true-to work in a place where I could share my beliefs about project work and Reggio inspired teaching with children, families and like-minded colleagues in an urban setting. To be connected to Butler University again and my past professors was exciting and to think about the opportunity to help mentor future teachers was exhilarating.
It has been three years since we have opened the Lab School, and it has been so rewarding. The staff is unlike any other staff I have worked with. To be surrounded by teachers who think similarly and have such a strong desire to learn and grow is amazing. The engagement and excitement for what we are doing in class by the children and families is ever-present. The opportunities to help future teachers think about the craft of teaching is so rewarding because we are helping future teachers but also constantly reflecting about our own practice.
Like I said before, it was an easy decision to come to the Lab School-one that has provided me with experiences and relationships that will never leave me.
