Library Listservs

I would like to remind everyone about our various library listservs and announce a small change in their configuration.

The Library group (library2@butler.edu) is for emails that need to go to all library staff (Irwin and Science). Technically, this isn’t a listserv but an Outlook “Group.”

librarians@listserv.butler.edu is the listserv to use for communications that need to go to all the librarians (Science and Irwin).

lib-rd@listserv.butler.edu is specifically for the Reference Desk. Because of all the changes we’ve been making in our Reference Services, I will be removing most of the librarians from this listserv and adding the students and part-time staff who work at the Reference Desk in Irwin Library. The focus will be on actual operational issues, so it won’t be relevant to those who don’t physically work at the Desk.

If you’re a librarian who has gotten used to using the “Reference Desk” listserv for emailing all the librarians, please begin using the Librarians one that was actually created for that purpose. It will
soon be the only one that does that.

Thanks much.

Outlook Calendars

This is a reminder regarding how we are now using Outlook Calendars in the library.

Personnel Calendar – only for
irregular exceptions to your regular schedule (sick days, out of
town, personal days, etc.)
Library Schedule – only for
scheduling library rooms
Reference Desk Calendar – only for posting scheduled on-call hours and substitutes
Personal Calendar (the one attached to your email) – for all personal
appointments, classes, meetings, etc., both regular and irregular, and for any
personal appointments that you wish to keep private

It is important that you put appointments on your Personal Calendar so that your colleagues can more easily schedule meetings with you. Remember that anything you want to keep personal you can mark Private, which will hide all details except that you’re busy at that time.

Thanks very much.

Update on "Generic Logons"

The passwords for our two generic logons (mainly used in Reference and the Science Library) have had their passwords changed. We were overdue anyway, and I’ve seen some people coming in and logging in with those accounts on their own.

The new logon info is available at the Reference Desk, both for libpub and libalum.

I’ve tested them both and they are working effective immediately.

Reference Printing Revisited

Just an FYI that our main Reference printer started jamming last night. This morning I found a torn piece of paper still in the side where the paper comes up. (NB: it’s important to make sure that, if a piece of paper tears while you’re removing it that you find EVERY PIECE. Even a tiny fragment in the right place can cause jams.) After clearing jams a couple times, it started working fine and did so for over an hour. Then it jammed again. When I cleared that jam and it jammed a second time, it finally gave me a service code. I’ve alerted Help Desk and given them all the necessary information.

Hopefully someone will be here early this afternoon to get it fixed. In the meantime, the other printer is working fine.

LibGuides Updates

Well, the biggest change in LibGuides is something we’ve been asking for: a LINK CHECKER.

You can check the links in your own LibGuides from your “My Admin” page. It appears that it’s run once a month. All you have to do is click that link and you’ll see a list of the broken links and which Guide they’re in. Can’t be much easier than that!

Here are some LibGuides Stats as of September. Remember that this program was launched in May 2007 and has only been seriously promoted for a little over a year. (And we’ve been officially using it only since January of this year.)

LibGuides Stats for September

Community Sites: 362
Librarian Accounts: 6218
Total Guides: 17,101
Total Pages: 112,669
Unique Visitors: 246,513

If you’d like to get the feed from the LibGuides Support Blog, it’s here: http://support.springshare.com/feed/

Also, we apparently were having issues with the Catalog Search from LibGuides in Facebook going to the PALNI site rather than our own Butler Libraries catalog. Although I thought I checked that function after we upgraded Aleph, it’s apparently been a problem since then. Since the Facebook search uses the same code as the regular search, we’ve probably had a problem with searching the catalog from ANY LibGuides app or widget. Yesterday I was able to get the code figured out and changed. As of this morning it appears to be continuing to work, even from outside Indiana.

If you would like more support, tips, ideas, etc., there are PLENTY available to you. Just log into your LibGuides “My Admin” page and click the Community tab. It’s well worth your time.
