Guest Series – Gradebook Part 2: Grade History

If you have ever needed to override or update a grade for any reason, it would be nice to have a paper trail documenting the grade revision. Today, I’ll introduce the new Grade History Report in the upgraded gradebook in Moodle 2.8.

This is a no-frills feature that performs its intended function very well. Select the grade item in question, and the Grade History Report will show you every time a grade has been revised by any grader. For most grade items, this will be the change from an empty grade to a reported grade. This makes changed grades stand out when you see an old grade in the “Original Grade” column instead of an empty cell.

The Grade History Report documents one change per line, so if you need to see the grade revision history for a single student, I would recommend using the Select Users button at the top to filter out all other students. This will show the paper trail for grade revision for a single student on a single assignment. It will document when the grade was revised, what the old grade was, what the revised grade is, and who made the change.

That’s it. A quick and easy way to catalog grade changes with an appropriate paper trail. I hope there will not be uncomfortable conversations where this feature becomes necessary, but it’s nice to know it’s there if you need it.
For more information on using the Gradebook see the Moodle Quickguides.
