Sisters Caroline and Emily Loughman have been dancing together since they were two years old.
The two grew up in Glen Ellyn, Illinois and have always pushed each other to become better in every part of life. Both sisters are currently on the Butler University Dance Team and are enjoying every minute they get to spend together.
After Emily graduated from high school, she was afraid the two would never dance together again. Two years later, Caroline decided to attend Butler along side her sister, giving the two the opportunity to showcase their talents together once more.
“Getting to share this experience together here at Butler, dancing on the team has been really special, it is something really fun we get to share and it’s always fun to have a close friend on the team,” Caroline says.
Emily, a senior, began dancing when she was three years old while Caroline, a sophomore, began at age four. The two were members of Steppin’ out Dance Company where they won numerous awards at local and national levels. Both sisters were also captains of their high school dance team their senior years, when they placed in the top five for the state competition.
The dance team performs at all home men’s football and basketball games along with other large on campus events. Along with that, the team practices two nights a week on the main gym in Hinkle Fieldhouse. Emily jokes that the two hang out “too much,” but goes on to say that the two are truly best friends. The two are also members of the Delta Gamma Sorority at Butler which has also helped bring closer.
Emily and Caroline’s teammates say that the two are a joy to work with and bring such positive energy to the team. Junior Grace Bowling, says that “Emily and Caroline work really well together, they have a similar dance style and they are a really great cohesive group that get along and really benefit the team.”
While the two sisters have danced together their whole lives, they rarely get frustrated or competitive with each other because of it. Emily says “dancing has definitely made us closer as sisters.”
Emily and Caroline have many of the same interests and hobbies, but their personalities are much different. Dance Team Director Cassia Dean, says that “their actual personalities can be very different and I think that helps them in a lot of ways.”
This will be the last year that Emily and Caroline dance together as Emily prepares to graduate in May. The sisters are looking forward to dancing together one last time and representing Butler University.
