Ron Berger – An Ethic of Excellence
I recently read a wonderful book written by educator Ron Berger. The book titled An Ethic of Excellence: Building a Culture of Craftsmanship with Students was published in 2003, and it provides beautifully descriptive examples of what project-based learning can look like in elementary school classrooms. Ron also writes extensively about the process of critique used at his school which involves a cycle of drafting work and gathering feedback from peers until the work is considered exemplary or in Ron’s words “beautiful.” I was moved by the commitment to high quality learning experiences and student work described in the book. Should you want to know more about what project-based learning can look like in an elementary school classroom, I highly recommend this book!
I have also found a few video clips of Ron describing his process of critique and approach to project work that you might find interesting.
