The Rhythm Discovery Center

Today we went on our field trip to the Rhythm Discovery Center downtown! It was incredible! The Rhythm Discovery Center is basically “An instrument museum” (Greyson’s words).  We learned about  different types of instruments, many we had never seen or heard of before! Our guide was fabulous and gave us an opportunity to play many of the instruments, including a giant tam tam and a giant gong! At the end of our visit, we formed a drum circle and played with our guide. We practiced playing fast and slow, soft (piano) and loud (forte). Afterwards, we had some freestyle time and friends were given the opportunity to play and dance. It was such a joyful time.

Afterwards, we had lunch in the Indianpolis Arts Garden. To our delight, several choirs were there singing Christmas carols. It was such a peaceful and enjoyable lunch! I was so proud too, our class had many compliments about how good of an audience we were being. I was so glad our class was able to end our field trip with a real life performance- it just seems fitting. The perfect ending to the perfect day!

Audiology Center

We had a mini field trip today to the audiology center! We are lucky enough to have it housed in our building. Miss Sally, our district audiologist, gave us a tour of the center and the soundproof hearing screening room. Miss Sally was impressed with our knowledge about the parts of the ear and taught us a little bit about a tool called a Timpometer. This tool measures our ear drums’ activity. She let each friend have a try. It was very cool to watch the computer show how our ear drums reacted to the vibration. Miss Sally also taught us about hearing aids and how they work. We learned that if we had trouble hearing, we could use a tool called a hearing aid to help us. We got to try out the aids and see how they amplified the sound for us. Such a neat day!

Field Trip to Butler University

Here we are!

We had a fabulous time at Butler on Friday! When we got to Butler in the morning, we had the chance to meet some new Butler friends who are part of an educational leadership and policy class in the College of Education. They have taken an interest in our garden project and our schoolwide garden initiative and are assisting us in getting funds to begin planting. They were also kind enough to walk us down to the farm and assist us in exploring the space, help us test soil at the farm, and wonder with us about the beginnings of our school garden. We are beginning to wonder what our own garden will look like and where we will place our garden. A big thanks to all of our chaperones and Butler students who joined us on this trip. 🙂

Da'Sean, Carriea, and Kaitlyn enjoy our quick bus ride to Butler University!

Miss Schmidt and friends are excited to be at Butler.

The beautiful view of the canal we passed while walking down to the farm.

Angela spots some of the cold weather vegetables growing at the Butler Farm.

Messi, David and a new Butler friend walk the farm and look for signs of growth.

Our group at the Butler Farm!

Ruth finds bees at the farm. How can bees be helpful to a garden?

Monica and a new Butler friend take soil samples.

Hutton enjoys Holcomb gardens.

Also…Field Trip Reminder

I also wanted to share about our field trip on Friday to Butler University! Please remember to send in your permission form if you have not already done so. Also, IPS has a wonderful program where they will provide us with boxed lunches free of charge. I do not know specifically what the kids will be having yet, so if your child has allergies/diet restrictions please plan to make other arrangements. Otherwise, feel free to NOT send a packed lunch. We will hopefully get to enjoy these lunches outside in Holcomb Gardens. 🙂
