After yoga today, we were very excited to begin to explore the data we collected yesterday! We began by discussing what situations you would take real data in everyday life. Students had some really great ideas, ranging from taking a family poll about dinner choices to much bigger and more significant ideas. They really seem to grasp the idea of collecting information using surveys and the importance of displaying their results in an easily readable and accessible way. We didn’t finish creating our graphs today, but we got a great start! Here are some pictures of our experience!

This week, we have been practicing collecting data and displaying it in various ways. We made a bar graph that showed how many students have lost a specific number of teeth. Each child was so engaged by this activity that we decided to try surveying other classes to collect information that we could graph.
Together, we created a data collection sheet to take to each class we visited so we knew exactly what to ask and could organize our findings! Today, we went in groups of four with a Butler teacher to each class room to ask these students about their teeth. We were very brave as we spoke in front of so many new faces and they were wonderful listeners!
Tomorrow, we will explore other ways to display this information visually to compare the number of teeth that have been lost in each room!

Today, we continued our study of teeth and the mouth by making a healthy snack that looked like a mouth! We used apples, honey sticks, and marshmallows to create this smile and students loved experimenting with different teeth formations and pulling their marshmallow teeth like a real dentist! What a great way to reinforce the ideas we have been studying, while eating something new to us!

Each Monday, we are lucky enough to have time in our school library! Mrs. Thomas, our media specialist, reads to us each week and then gives us time to check out a book. Students have the option of bringing library books home, but they have to come back each Monday! We have been using this time to practice selecting a just right level book for us.
Last week, we started to read a book about Sam the library mouse, who makes his home on the shelves between the books! Today, while Makayla was searching for a book to check out, she found a stack of books that Sam had written just for us! Students loved to read this story by our. Ew friend and think he is an incredible author (with very good handwriting for a mouse!). Ask your child about their library experience and encourage them to bring their books home to read to you.
Reminder, Scholastic book fair orders are due back next Friday, October 5th!
