Dental Student Visit

Today, we had a special guest visitor… a dental student from IU School of Dentistry!  He came to talk to us about what it is like to be in dental school and show him some of his tools!  Students were engaged with what he was saying and truly wanted to know more!  They had wonderful questions to ask him and learned a lot from what he had to say!  Each student had something to contribute to our conversation and were excited to share what they have learned so far.

Moving forward with our project, we have a dentist coming next week to read to us and teach us about dental health and will hopefully be taking a trip to a dentist office very soon!

Tomorrow, we will be representing the number of teeth each child has lost in a graph, so be sure to ask your child about this experience!

Thank you to all of the families who were able to make it and join in on the fun!  We will be having another game night after fall break so there will be another chance to join the fun. Word Work

We have been incorporating a new time during our day called word workshop. This is typically a thirty minute period following reading workshop time that focuses on the study of words, word parts, letters, and letter sounds. Some days, students will work in groups on a specific activity that targets what they need in terms of words. This week, we have been working as a whole class to learn the procedures for this time of day.

We have engaged in two activities during word workshop this week. Some students have been using spoons to match upper and lower case letters together. This is to help students understand the many different looks of the same letter! Other students have been using stacking cups to practice sight word fluency and accuracy. Both of these activities have fostered friendly competition between students and have helped us grow!

Next week, we will be focusing on beginning sounds. Some students will work with consonant blends such as th, ch, sh, while others will be looking at individual letter sounds.

I am currently creating supplemental at home activities for families who have requested these. These include sight word and alphabet work. Please let me know if you would like something to work on at home!

Ten Frames

Today during math, our class explored the ten frame!  This is a rectangle divided into ten squares that can be used as a counting tool or as as an alternative to express numbers one through ten.  We started our lesson using a guided exploration of the ten frame by creating a giant one on the floor!  I asked students to get into the ten frame a few at a time and we talked about what number was represented.  Then, students were given a few frames to study and count individually.  Once they looked them over, they were asked to stand up at different times and do an action depending on the number their frame represented.  They enjoyed this movement break and grasped the ten frame concept quickly!

Tomorrow, we will use our new knowledge to learn a math game… ten frame war!

Ask your students about their first trip to the library today!  They will be allowed to bring their books home starting next week.  Some of your students have leveled readers in their folder to read for their log tonight and others will get their first book tomorrow!
