Exciting News- A Field Trip!

Today we created a class calendar where we could keep track of imporntant dates and events and learn about the days of the week and the months of the year. After our calendar had a month and days of the week on it, I shared that I had an imporntant date to add to the calendar- a field trip to the Indianapolis International Airport! The kids are so excited! We will be taking this trip on Wednesday, November 16th and it will be an all day event. We are going to tour the various parts of the airport and may even get to see some airplanes up close. Tomorrow, your child will come home with a blue permission slip form asking for consent to allow your child to come on this trip and asking if you would like to help chaperone. We would love many adult helpers! After adding this imporntant date to our calendar, we counted down how many days until our field trip- 15! We wonder how many days until the field trip it will be tomorrow-will the number get larger or smaller?

Pumpkin Seeds- Yum!

Angela tries the pumpkin seeds. Does she like them?

Fall is such an exciting time, with the arrival of changing and falling leaves, pumpkins, and Halloween! Today, our class celebrated the fall season by doing a pumpkin investigation by estimating a pumpkin’s height, weight, and seed count, and then testing our estimations. We discovered that our large pumpkin was exactly 12 inches tall, weighed 14 pounds, and had over 500 seeds inside! WOW! We couldn’t believe all of those seeds came from inside just one pumpkin! It took a long time for us to count, but we did it! And what does one class do with all of those 500 seeds, you may ask! Roast them, of course! We enjoyed our roasted seeds with a little salt at the end of the day. Most of the kids seemed to really enjoy them and said they tasted like popcorn. I never realized it before, but they do kind of taste like popcorn! To top the day off, we carved two pumpkins in small groups and have them displayed outside our classroom to show to our friends. Zek came up with the wonderful idea of writing our names on the pumpkins so tomorrow we will be writing our names on the backs to show our class unity.

Pumpkins!

We were very busy in Math Workshop today!  In honor of Halloween we used pumpkins to help us in math.  We estimated the height and weight of the class pumpkin.  After that we took the actual measurements and talked about the differences.  After that the kids had the chance to get their hands in the goop!  It was so funny to see their reactions!  The kids were divided into small groups and had to count their pumpkin seeds.  The kids ended up sorting them into groups of ten and then they were able to count quickly!

Pumpkin fun!

Today, we did all things pumpkin…did pumpkin math by estimating how heavy our pumpkin is, estimating how tall our pumpkin was, and estimating how many seeds we had in the pumpkin.  Throughout the day we accomplished each tas except for talking about how many seeds we have so tomorrow we will send our papers home with how many seeds we had in our pumpkin.  The children LOVED pulling the seeds out of the pumpkin and getting their hands dirty.

It was a fun day today!  Have a fun night tonight!

I will add pictures tonight from our day today!
