Chickens and Compost!

It was great to see all of the children this morning and nice to hear about everyone’s break.  The students were excited to find out that we are taking care of the chickens this week.  Today we collected six eggs.  The students have already been predicting how many we will have tomorrow.  Also, we were able to take a look at the new compost that is in the garden.  Our fruits and veggies from lunch will be composted and then the soil will be used in the garden!

Author Study

Today the students were very excited to see which author they would be studying.  We got into our groups and explored our own author more deeply.  We especially looked closely at illustrations and word choice.  The students made great observations about their author’s style.  We will continue this tomorrow and then after break we will be able to start drafting our own stories that emulate each author!

Dividing at Home

During community circle yesterday, I posed the question, when do you divide at home?

I was impressed with how easily students were able to identify times they add outside of school. Here were some of their responses:

I divide the cherries when I play High-Ho Cherry-o! – Olivia

When I was in preschool, there were four balls and two people. We had to divide the balls. -Geneva

I divide when I share fruit snacks in the car with my sister. -Madeline

I divide when I share pizza with my family. -Salih

I divide when I share peanut butter and jelly with my brother. -Danielle

When me and my brother eat grapes, we have to divide the grapes. There was one left over, so I gave it to my mom. – Aaliyah (This led to a great mini convo about remainders!)

When I had my birthday, we divided the cake so that I could share it with my friends. -Abel

I had eight Popsicle and I had to share them with my cousins. – Jaeda

So great to be aware of the math that is happening outside of school! This is certainly the goal!
