Hundreds Chart

We have added a new exciting thing to our Math Materials.  This week we introduced the hundreds chart.  The kids helped me write the numbers 1 to 100.  This is a very valuable tool when talking about number sense.  It is a visual so kids can see patterns in numbers.  As we progress with our skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s we will change numbers so we can visually see the skip.  While I have all these educational uses, I do believe the kids favorite thing to do with the hundreds chart is play “The Missing Number Game”  This is where a child goes up and takes out a number from the pocket.  The rest of then class then opens their eyes and has to guess the missing number.  I believe they would play this all day if I let them 🙂

Face Painting

Many weeks ago when we started yoga, we started learning different animal poses.  The kids have taken to them very quickly.  In one of the yoga books we use as a guide, it suggested face painting animal faces on the kids.  We suggested this to the kids and they were so excited!  After a wonderful week of almost perfect yoga times, we brought out the face paint.  The day was finally here!  While we couldn’t do each child’s whole face, they each got to pick a design for their cheek.

Ice cream, trees, and acting…oh my!

Today we finally got to have our ice cream party, and the kids loved it! My mom came and brought the ice cream and toppings, who in case you ever hear about Mrs. Estridge, she comes in about once a week. The kids had delicious treats and seemed excited for our next class reward.

In addition to the icecream excitement, we have also been starting to work on building a tree/house for our praying mantis, Cinderella Lightning  McQueen. On Wednesday, in the studio, students worked on their first drafts of drawings of what the tree should look like. On Thursday, we did second on third drafts. We are now working on four group drafts and are excited to come up with a final whole class draft soon.

After drawing the drafts, students did a gallery walk of their work.

Guest Speaker

Mr. Boyle was very helpful as he explained about recycled carpet!

We had a guest speaker in our classroom today.  Mr. Boyle came in from InterfaceFLOR to talk to us about recycled carpet.  His company recycles old carpet and makes it into new carpet!  During his time with us he showed a video of how the new carpet was made.  The kids really loved to see the big spools of thread!  Someone said, “Is that as tall as me?!”  This was a very informative experience.  The kids were able to see another item that can be recycled in our world and how it is done.  In addition, we found out that our own carpet in our classroom is recycled carpet!  Everyone was very excited about this!

After the video we had a lot of questions!
