“I think we should have, like, jobs!

Evey morning, we have share time as part of our morning meeting. This morning started with sharing about the State Fair and family outings. Then a friend called on Regan to share, and she said something a little different.

“I think we should have, like jobs.”

After hearing a chorus of “yeahs!” We delved a little deeper to find out what exactly Regan meant by jobs. She shared that our class had jobs last year and she would like to see that continued. I then presented the kids with a question, “Well why do we need jobs?” Friends expressed the desire to keep our room tidier and assist in caring for the room. Then Sascha brought up an interesting math problem. She said, “Well we have more kids than last year, so we will need to have more kids doing each job. Last year we had 20 kids doing a job and it was 2 kids for a job. This year, we may need to do like 3 kids for a job, because we have more than 20.” Messi suggested something else, “Well what if some jobs had 2 people, and some had 3, and some had 2, and some had 3?” Bea shouted, “Like a pattern?!” Then another friend brought up another point. Tajanaye said, “Well what if we don’t want to do jobs everyday? Like just some days?” This led us to a discussion about whether or not jobs should be done every day or on rotating days. Friends took turns sharing their opinion and mentioned when they supported one another’s ideas. After a while of sharing opinions, Jo’Vyon suggested something- “We should take a survey.” With Jo’Vyon’s suggestion, we decided to vote on whether or not we would have jobs every day or on rotating days. By a little bit, we decide on having jobs every day. Later on, we revisited our conversation about jobs. It goes as follows.

Why should we have jobs? Mrs Argus

Because its like grownups jobs. Beatrice

So our room will look more tidy. Lucas

The people that clean want it to look nice. My grandma has a job. Tajanaye

My dad works at Fishers High School. Maria

My mom is a lawyer and gets people outta jail. Miles

My dad works on cars and fixes them and gets paid. BreAnna

My mommy works at a food place and a doctor place. Amiah

My grandma works at IPS, she helps people learn. J’Den

My mom is a doctor and helps kids, too. Beatrice

My dad is going back to college to be a nurse. Lucas

My dad, he works at Angie’s list! Dylan

My mommy is a nurse. Messi

Our conversation could have kept going, the kids were so enthusiastic to share about loved ones that they knew with jobs. I am wondering if Regan’s simple idea could turn into a larger investigation on jobs and their purpose… tune back to see!

VOGUE- Strike a Pose!

Regan and Miss Legg play a game together. We love our Butler friends so much!

Tajanaye on the “runway.”

Monica having a great time!

Hutton walks with confidence!

As you may know, this week, our class was introduced to the world of dress up. The kids have had so much fun using their imagination to create characters and scenarios for the stories they have created! Yesterday, Messi expressed interest in hosting a fashion show. I shared that it was New York Fashion Week and there had been many runway shows throughout the past few weeks to celebrate. Messi and his friends organized a troupe to dress up in fancy outfits and hit the runway. It was really neat to see Messi take a leadership role and tell friends how to line up, when to go down the runway, and demonstrate a pose they needed to strike at the end of the line. We even had a band playing music for our friends. One of the best parts was when the entire group went down the “runway” together laughing and singing. So much joy 🙂

Mexico Immersion!

Friends create pinatas with Miss Schmidt.

Each morning this week, several friends have been joining Miss Schmidt in the hallway to create some Mexican culture- pinatas! Our pinatas are formed around balloons, and then little strips of newspaper and tissue paper are glued around, similar to paper mache. While we don’t think we will be filling these pinatas with anything inside, we hope to have them displayed for our trip to Mexico, which is next Tuesday evening from 6-7. We hope you can come and see them!

Tajanaye tries out the drums.

Today during studio and explore, several children were drawn to a medium sized, wooden basket that recently appeared in our classroom. Inside, our friends found special instruments from Mexico and Central America that Mrs. Argus has collected on trips. The kids loved trying out the maracas, pan pipe, and drums, just to name a few! Messi and Monica organized a group of about six friends and started leading a band. They would say in unison, “5, 6, 7, 8” and then the rest of the friends would start playing. What a neat way to work together to create something. This teamwork was discussed during our closing meeting. After playing in unison for a while, Messi and Angela noticed that while the band was playing beautiful music, there were no dancers to enjoy it! Angela called to the rest of the class, “WE NEED MORE DANCERS!” and a slew of friends ran over to the band and started dancing, imitating the way we have seen people from Mexico dance in videos. We had a fiesta in our very own classroom!

Friends dance to our Mexican band,

A jam session!

March 10 – Open House

On March 10th the IPS/Butler University Laboratory School hosted an Open House for our students and parents. The children enjoyed the many activities that were set up in the hallway where our school will be located next year. Staff members from St. Mary’s were present to answer questions about the preschool and childcare services St. Mary’s will offer to families next year. Butler University College of Education students were also on hand to facilitate activities with the children allowing parents to tour the school and ask questions. It was truly a joy to see the children together for the first time as they engaged with one another and with the materials available to them!

Values of the Reggio Approach – Image of the Child

This entry is one of a series of entries designed to familiarize families with the core values of the Reggio approach to education.  In the Preschools and Infant-Toddler centers of Reggio Emilia and in Reggio inspired schools in the United States, educators have what is referred to as a strong “image of the child”.  A definition of “image of the child” would be capable, creative and responsible.   Continue Reading »
