Admission is free and open to the public. Call (317) 940-9227 for more information.
Wood, a children’s book author based in Indianapolis, will discuss her recent most work, I Lay My Stitches Down: Poems of American Slavery. Written by Cynthia Grady, the book uses the American folk tradition of quilting as a structural framework. In her illustrations, Wood employs African and American textile patterns and folk art motifs to create a moving witness and beautiful complement to the poetry.
The book has been selected for the New York Public Library’s “Children’s Books 2012: 100 Books for Reading and Sharing” list.
Following the presentation, Wood will sign books, which will be available for sale at the event. Light refreshments will be served.
A painter, illustrator, designer, and writer specializing in rich African symbols, Wood received the American Book Award for her first book, Going Back Home, and the American Library Association’s Coretta Scott King Award for her 1999 work i see the rhythm.
She resides in the Butler-Tarkington neighborhood. More information about Wood is available at http://www.michelewood.com/websplash.html.
