Many of you have been seeing the error that pops up on the library website’s main page. That error is because of the code that makes the Ask A Librarian images change. The web designer who has been working on our site will not be able to get to fixing that error for at least another week because of the demands of his other projects. Therefore he has removed the cycling feature for now.
That means that for now we will be forced to look at pictures of Sheri on EVERY page on the website. But at least that error is gone.
In another couple of weeks we’ll hopefully have the code fixed and get changing librarian pictures without the error message.
Thanks for your patience.
Scott
The problem we had when printing materials off the new library website has been resolved. You may recall that when we tried to print SRGs or other pages, we got a long list of links (basically the header’s dropdown links) that took up over one whole page. Plus we had Ask-A-Librarian images at the bottom of every printout.
We have now implemented Butler’s first Printing Style Sheet, a CSS file which tells the web browser to hide the header, sidebar info, etc., when printing. The result is a nicely formatted page ready for printing. Basic web pages, SRGs, citation guides, etc., will all print cleanly now, without all the extra links and things that were showing up originally.
I’ve been waiting and testing to see how it works, but now I’m sure. You don’t need AdAware any more and you may safely uninstall it from your computer.
The new version of Symantec AntiVirus that we got this summer does its own checking for that kind of thing and it’s pretty good. I still run Spybot Search & Destroy, which does find a few things from time to time, but AdAware is not finding ANYTHING important any more. So there’s no point in keeping it and running it any more either.
DO make sure that you’ve got your AntiVirus program
- automatically updating the virus definitions and
- automatically scanning your entire C: drive at least once a week.
If you’re using Spybot S&D, it IS possible to schedule it to run automatically. Contact Scott if you want help in setting that up.
AntiVirus Updating
To update your virus definitions:
Run your Symantec Anti-Virus program (Start–Programs–Symantec Client
Security–Symantec AntiVirus Client). Click the LiveUpdate button to
get the updates right now. To schedule regular updating (highly recommended),
click File–Schedule Updates. Check the box to enable automatic updates
and select a time that your computer will be on and logged in.
To scan for viruses: Run your
Symantec Anti-Virus program (Start–Programs–Symantec Client
Security–Symantec AntiVirus Client). Click Scan Computer, check the
box next to “C: Local Disk” and click the Scan button to scan right
now. To schedule regular scanning (highly recommended),
click Scheduled Scans, then New Scheduled Scan. Click Next, then set a
time and frequency (daily is best, but weekly is okay) that you’ll be
logged onto the computer, but preferably when you’ll be away from it.
Lunchtime is good, or if you have a regular class or meeting. Click
Next and check the box next to “C: Local Disk” and then click the Save
button. You’re all set!
It has been discovered this week that AOL is blocking emails from Butler University (like many other schools and email systems). That means if you send an email from your Butler account to an AOL address, it will probably be bounced back to you. You SHOULD receive a message if it does get rejected, so at least you’ll know.
