8. Mac Recorder Hot Keys

InformationHotkeys have been added to Recorder 4.1 as an extra feature to aid in session creating. Now you can use a few keys to toggle the start, pause, and stop functions on the Panopto Recorder even if it is minimized or not the currently active window.

This means you can stop recording while Powerpoint is still presenting. Likewise, you could also pause the recorder without minimizing other opened content, making your presentation look smoother.

***Please make sure no other programs will interfere with the hotkeys enabled by Panopto Recorder. The software uses “Option + Command + R” and “Option + Command + P” to control recording***

Option + Command + R: Start Recording

Login to your Panopto Recorder as normal. Select a folder (unless you are recording offline) and session name along with any other sources you wish to use for this presentation.

Press “Option + Command + R” to begin recording.

Important: You will want to test this hotkey ahead of time to ensure that all of your devices are working properly. This error message will only display if the Panopto recorder is in one of the active windows, otherwise it will remain in the taskbar until selected.

Your camera may have a built in light up feature to designate that it is in use.

Option + Command + P: Pause Recording

Pressing “Option + Command + P” will simply pause the recording. Just like clicking the actual Pause button, this feature is non destructive and will still record content while activated; it simply creates an edit to your presentation that can be modified under the edit tab of the web interface. Please read the details about “Pause” in our Mac Basic Recording [1] documentation if you have any more questions about this feature.

Option + Command + R: Stop Recording

“Option + Command + R” will stop recording. If you have automatic uploads enabled, your session will be uploaded to your organizations server.

7. Mac Keynote Compatibility

InformationWith the Panopto Recorder for Mac OS X 10.8 – 10.10, presenters have the ability to capture their Keynote slide presentations. Please see the below matrix for what versions of Keynote are supported on the various versions of Panopto.

What Can I do if My Version is Not Supported?

Capture your screen

You may capture your screen while presenting in Keynote.

 *Note: Doing this will capture what’s being shown on your screen, it will not create events for each individual slide or index the content from the slides. 

Present your Keynote presentation in Office for Mac PowerPoint

Within Keynote, you have the ability to save your presentation in PowerPoint format. Doing this will preserve slide indexing, and allow viewers to search for terms in the Panopto Viewer.

*Note: To do this, open your Keynote presentation. Once open, choose File>Export from your menu bar. A dialogue will drop down in Keynote, and you will want to choose “PPT” and click “Next”. You will then given the option to change the document name, and storage location. Please note,  that all slide transisitions may not be available in Office for Mac PowerPoint.

 

6. Enable Keynote Support in the Mac Recorder

How to enable Keynote 5 support

In the latest version of the Panopto Recorder for Mac, at your initial login you will see a new checkbox titled “Record Keynote 5 or lower” (see below). Clicking the “Enable” button will allow our Keynote plugin to be installed.

Enabling Keynote may not work. You can resolve this using the below steps:

If you’re brought to this page after trying to enable Keynote support, please follow the below steps to allow for the plugin to be installed.

Navigate to Keynote 5 in Finder

– Right Click Keynote.app, choose “Show Package Contents”

– Then enter Contents/Resources/Animations  – Right click the Animations folder, choose “Get Info”

– At the bottom the Get Info window, expand “Sharing & Permissions”

The following permissions must be applied:

admin Read & Write

everyone – Read & Write

If those are not set in this manner, please change the privileges to mimic these.

*Please be sure to click the gear icon at the bottom of the “Get Info” window, and choose “Apply to enclosed items”

Once this is complete, please re-open your Panopto Recorder, and enable Keynote 5.

Note: If you have blocked the Mac OS X feature “Spotlight” from indexing the path where Keynote is installed, the Recorder will be unable to detect Keynote being installed

5. Mac Recorder Capture Resolutions

The Mac Recorder will accept the native resolution of the input device up to the set Max Video Resolution.

4. Mac Recording Status

InformationAfter ending a recording with the Mac Recorder you will be taken to the status screen. Here you will be able to free up room on your hard drive, find links to completed recordings, share recordings and see the progress of recordings that are not yet available for viewing.

Overview

Session – Shows the session name, denoted by the User.

Date – The date of which the recording was done.

Length – The duration of the recording.

Status – Shows the progress of the recording.  By default the Mac Recorder will upload recordings once the User stops the recording.

Preview

During the upload progress or post upload, the “Preview” function allows playback of either the audio, video (with audio) or screen capture of the recording.  Click  EyeCon to enlarge the view of the preview playback of the recording.

Recording Information

Provides the details of the recording; the “Folder” to which it is being saved to, the “Session” name, what “Streams” were recorded, the “Status” of the recording, “Links” to view the recording online or share the recording with others,

  • If the recording has a status of “Completed” there are two buttons; “Delete” and “Actions.

Delete – Gives you the ability to delete the recording from folder “Panopto Recordings” on the local machine, which will free up hard drive space.

Actions -> Show Files – Will open the recording named folder within the “Panopto Recordings” folder on the local computer, showing all files associated with that specific recording.

  • If the recording has a status of “Upload Paused” the “Delete” button is replaced with “Resume Upload” which will allow the recording to continue uploading to the server.
  • If the recording has a status of “Offline Recording” the “Delete” button is replaced with “Choose Folder and Upload”

The “Folder” text box becomes active.

Choose the desired folder by clicking on the up/down arrows.  To add a new folder click on the “+” sign.

After choosing the folder, either keep the existing session name of the recording or rename it, and click Upload.

The recording will start to upload to the server.  Within the list of recordings and the “Recording Information” pane the Mac Recorder shows the status of the recording.

Once the recording is uploaded to the server, the “Status” will change to ‘Completed’ and the recording can now be viewed online and shared with others.

1. Installing the Mac Recorder

Information
This document will walk you through the installation of the Panopto Mac Recorder for Intel based Mac computers running at least OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.x.

Install and Setup

This document will walk you through the installation of  Panopto for Mac for Intel based Mac computers.

*Note- Panopto for Mac is not supported on Apple computers running a 32-bit CPU architecture

Note that the encoding engine provided by Apple and leveraged by Panopto is more efficient in OSX 10.10+. Users who upgrade from OSX 10.9 will see marked performance improvements.

High or Ultra Quality: Quad-Core Intel Core i7 recommended**

Panopto for Mac 5.0 is expected to work on most Mac systems running Mac OSX version 10.9+ with an Intel Core i3 or Core M and the default Panopto configuration. This includes a Primary audio and video stream and a single secondary video (screen capture) with the quality level set to the default ‘Standard Resolution’.

Note that Standard Quality is roughly equivalent to the quality in Panopto for Mac v4.9.

**Considerations for High or Ultra Quality

If you wish to increase the quality of the capture, it is recommended that you run at least a recent (2014+) Quad-Core Intel Core i7 processor.

Since environmental variables such as CPU speed, additional applications running, and other items can consume system resources, it is highly recommended that you perform tests when increasing quality on a particular system prior to using it in production.

Note that additional streams will increase the system demands, especially at High or Ultra quality.

Panopto for Mac Installation

1.  Download Panopto for Mac by logging-in to your Panopto site and selecting “Download Recorder”

2.  Run the “Panopto.pkg” file

After logging into the Mac Recorder using your Butler credentials click Create New Recording

5.  By default Panopto for Mac is set to record to the default folder set by your administrator. Once you successfully record to a folder, Panopto will set that as your default folder the next time you log in. If you would like to change the folder to record to, click on the up/down arrows to select a folder.  Or create a folder by clicking on the “+” sign. Additionally, you can record content offline and upload to the server at a later time.

Additional Settings

1. In the menu bar, click on Panopto, Preferences

2.  These settings can be customized to your preference.

Upload recordings automatically: upon the completion of the recording the files will be uploaded to the server.

Primary quality video:  this setting will adjust the quality of the primary video

Secondary quality video:  this setting will adjust the quality of the secondary video

Recording Folder:  this setting allows you to set the folder where your session files will be stored.

Enable Recording Hotkeys:  this setting will allow you to use the hotkeys within Panopto for Mac.

2. Basic Mac Recording

InformationThe Panopto Recorder is very small and very easy to install. It can only be installed on computers OSX Leopard, OSX Snow Leopard, and OSX Lion. Your computer should also have a large amount of free drive space to capture your video/recording.

Logging In

Creators are able to log into Panopto for Mac with their Butler credentials and record video, audio, PowerPoint/Keynote presentations and also add Screen Capture functionality.

1.  Locate the Panopto under Applications (or from the Dock, if it was placed there) and run the app.

2.  Click Sign in

3.  If the Server box is empty enter butler.hosted.panopto.com and press ENTER. Select Moodle from the Get Providers for Server options. Log into Moodle using your Butler credentials.

4.  Click Create New Recording

Adding Folders and New Sessions

By default, the Recorder will open up to the last known good configuration of recording devices.  If you have recorded content before, the same devices will automatically be chosen.

In this example, we have not recorded content before, Panopto for Mac defaults to Offline Recording.

To complete an Online Recording, click the down arrows as highlighted in red below, if there are folders available.

Choosing Recording Devices

Whether you are recording offline or to a desired Folder, you can choose the devices that you wish to record with. These devices include web cams, video cameras, audio inputs, screen captures, PowerPoint/Keynote and remote devices.  To select the device you wish to use in your recording, simply check the box next to the device(s) listed within the Mac Recorder application.

**Note:  Audio is required for all recordings to complete and be posted to the web.  If recording from two separate computers, Panopto for Mac will allow you to record with no audio or video selected, however, the session will not process until the other computer uploads the audio and/or video to the system.  You will receive a pop up error message if no audio/video is selected when recording.

The following sections will show how to select and record from various inputs.  The combination of what inputs to record is chosen by the user by simply choosing what they wish to record.

Primary Source

Under Primary Source, you can choose what Audio/Video device you would like to record. In my example I am choosing the LifeCam for both Audio and Video.

Slides

Under the Slides option, you can choose to capture PowerPoint or Keynote slides.

Secondary Sources

Within the Secondary Sources box of Panopto for Mac, you can choose to capture your screen, or an additional video source such as a webcam, document camera, etc.. Click Secondary 2 if you wish to include 2 secondary sources. You will notice that sources already selected appear greyed out.

Start Recording

After selecting the available inputs, begin the recording by clicking on “Record”

To stop recording content, switch back to Panopto (Command +Tab), and click on “Stop”

The next screen will show the status of the recordings.  By default Panopto for Mac will automatically upload the recorded content to the server.  As the recording is being transferred to the server, you can preview the recording in the “Preview” area if “Audio,” “Video,” or “Screen Capture” was recorded.  If the preview was not sufficient, you could choose to “Pause Upload” to pause the upload of the files to the server.  The “Actions” button has two options; “Show Files” or “Delete” (will show or delete the local files in the Panopto Recordings directory).  Click here for more detailed information on the recording status.
