Butler Blue II (Nickname: Blue) is the second in a young lineage of English Bulldogs bred by Frank and Jeane King of Kong King Kennels in Lizton, Ind., which have served as the mascot of Butler University since 2000. Blue II is owned by Michael Kaltenmark, a 2002 Butler graduate and director of the University’s Office of Web Marketing and Communications, his wife, Tiffany, and their human son, Everett (Baby Bro). Blue II (male) was born March 27, 2004 and his first day of service to Butler was on May 20 that same year.

Blue II is also the nephew of Butler Blue I (female), who served as the first official Butler University live mascot in 2000 before retiring in 2004. Butler had a history of “unofficial” bulldog mascots that were kept by various fraternities throughout the years after officially adopting the bulldog as the school’s mascot in 1919. Blue II is present at nearly every Butler home football and basketball game, other athletic events and many University-related functions. Not to mention, Blue II is quite handy with the social media, with frequent posts on Twitter, a plethora of photos on Flickr and even a live office webcam.

Butler Blue III, also known as “Trip,” was born Dec. 23, 2011 in Lizton, Ind., by breeders Frank and Jeanne King, owners of Kong King Kennel. Weighing just 13.5 ounces at birth, Blue III is an AKC registered male English Bulldog, with red brindle and white markings. His parents are Sire, Ch. Exact Classic Comet, and Dam, Kongs Sarah.

Also of note, Blue III is the great grandson of Ch. Cherokee Legend Rock, one of the nation’s winningest and most decorated English Bulldogs of the last decade and of all time. Fitting lineage, since Blue III works closely with Blue II to learn the true art of being “America’s Dog” on and off the campus of Butler University. He will assume sole mascot duties at Butler after Blue II retires, which is a date that has yet to be determined.

Like his predecessor, Blue III also lives with Michael Kaltenmark ’02, director of Web marketing, and his wife Tiffany. In addition, Blue III enjoys great care and support from Bark Tutor, City Dogs Grocery, Don Hinds Ford, Good Dog Hotel & Spa, Holistic Select, Nike, WellPet, and Dr. Kurt Phillips’ 92 of Mass Ave Animal Clinic and Woodland Animal Hospital.
