‘Butler War Song’ – John Heiney ’23
With the first official home game of the Butler University Men’s Basketball season scheduled for this week, it’s time for a very special edition of “Blue 2unes.” This installment features the one and only “Butler War Song,” penned by the Class of 1923’s John Heiney, as I’m guessing that it might time for a little refresher on the lyrics.
I figure we’ll have a few newbies in the stands this year given the record attendance at the pre-season exhibition games and the fact that the NBA lockout still going strong, so the extra tutoring can’t hurt. Plus, I don’t want any excuses for hand-sitting! It’s the least you can do to stand up and clap when the Butler Band plays the “Butler War Song.” It’s pretty recognizable, trust me.
But more than just standing and clapping, I’d like to see some mouths moving as well. So if you don’t know the words, now is the chance to learn them. For your viewing and listening convenience, the YouTube video below has both the lyrics and music. Get to work!

Butler War Song
We’ll sing the Butler war song,
We’ll give a fighting cry;
We’ll fight the Bulldog battle-
…Bulldogs ever do or die.
And in the glow of victory firelight,
Hist’ry cannot deny
To add a page or two
For Butler’s fighting crew
Beneath the Hoosier sky.John Heiney
Class of 1923
