Contest Rules

Co-Sponsored by the Butler University English Department and Bookstore, the Blue II Haiku Contest is open to all. Only one submission per e-mail address. Category winners will be notified via the e-mail address they provide. Haiku submissions will be publicly displayed online.

Judging

The Contest will be open through Blue II's birthday/retirement party on March 29, 2013 and will close that day at 5:00 p.m. (EST). Judging will occur on Monday, April 1, 2013 and winners will be notified thereafter. One grandprize winner will be selected amongst the five category winners and will receive the grand prize of the Nikon Coolpix S3300 digital camera, loaded with images of Butler Blue II.

Haiku Guidelines

Haiku in English are poems usually written in three short lines. Sometimes they are written in a single line. They can capture a feeling or image.

In English, the tradition has arisen for the poem to appear most often in three lines rather than one (although it should still have two juxtaposed parts, with one of the parts filling two lines). The two parts, sometimes fragmentary are at the very least grammatically independent, but also usually imagistically distinct as well. One line is a fragment and the other two lines combine grammatically to become a phrase. A haiku should never have three distinct parts; it should have a maximum of two.

Blue II Haiku submissions may be of a pseudo-haiku style that allows the author to write whatever s/he thinks in a 5-7-5 syllable pattern.
