03. Viewing at 60 fps (frames per second)

InformationAs part of the 4.8 release, we’re excited to announce that Panopto is the first enterprise video platform to support 60fps video delivery.

This means that high frame rate video sources, including camcorders, document cameras, and other HDMI devices, can now be recorded and live webcast in Panopto at up to 60 frames per second. It also means that pre-recorded 60fps videos—say, from an iPhone 6—can be uploaded into Panopto’s video content management system and streamed on demand at their original high frame rate.

Some specifics:

-On Windows, 60fps is only supported for the primary stream (not secondary inputs such as screencapture and document cameras)

-For the Windows clients, it will automatically capture at 60fps if the camera hardware supports it

-Supported via media import

-Supported if 60 fps recording from iPhone

Read more about this on our blog

We think the best way to experience this new feature is to watch a 30 fps video side by side with a 60 fps one. Enjoy!

    • Users see a new home page when navigating to the web application. When unauthenticated, users see the most recent public content in the system and any public content curated by the administrator. After signing in, users see content curated by their administrator, content shared with the user, and the most recent content that they can access.

6. Approval Workflow

InformationThe Publisher’s job is to approve content submitted by creators in a specific folder. To access this feature, you need to contact the Help Desk (940-HELP) and request that you be assign a ‘Publisher’ role.

Turning on session approval for a specific folder:

1. First navigate to your desired folder in Panopto then click on the ‘gear’ or ‘Settings’.

2. Scroll down and select the radio button labeled ‘When approved by a publisher’.

3. After that is applied in settings, go to the ‘Share’ tab within the folder and give your desired user Publisher access.

4. After a user is given the Publisher permissions then you may begin approving and rejecting content.

Request approval of sessions:

1. Navigate to your recently uploaded session.

2. Click on the ‘Settings’ button for that session. From there you can request the session to be approved.

Approving or rejecting sessions:

1. You want to first navigate to your recently uploaded session as the Publisher.

2. Click on settings.

3. To the right of the ‘Approval’ text you can choose whether to Cancel, Approve, or Reject the session.

4. From there all you have to do is click ‘Approve’ and the session will be approved. You can ‘Reject’ the session after you have approved it if it was deemed as a mistake.

5. After you click the ‘Reject’ button it will ask you to provide a reason for rejecting it. The Creator of the content will receive an e-mail about the rejection and the reason that the Publisher rejected it.

6. You can also reapprove it after you have rejected it.

2. Advanced Podcasts Features

InformationAdvanced Podcast Featuers

If you have disabled podcasts on your site, you will not have access to this functionality.

Step 1

Locate the session that you would like to change podcast outputs for, hover over the session name and click “Settings”:

Step 2.

Now that we are on the overview page, click “Outputs”

Step 3.

On the outputs page, we want to scroll down to the “Video Podcast” section of this tab. Click the top drop down menu and select the desired output from the “Type” menu.

Before we begin the podcast type overview, it is important to note that there is a server setting, PodcastSlideDisplayIntervalSeconds: This setting controls how long a powerpoint slide can remain inactive until the view will revert back to the primary feed. The default setting for this is 60.

Please note you can also set the default podcast type globally on your system settings page using the “DefaultPodcastType” All new podcasts will be generated using this format.

1.) Mixed Video (On version 4.1, this has since been removed in 4.2)

This format will display the primary source first, and alternative between secondary sources when activity is detected. In other words, advancing a powerpoint slide will revert the view back to the slide. After the designated period of inactivity, the view will switch back to the primary feed until a change is detected on powerpoint.

2.) Primary Video Only

Formatting to this selection will only display the primary video source of your session. If this podcast mode is selected, the output will use the input resolution instead of the specified podcast resolution (as detailed in the next section in the “quality” information for the podcast.)

3.) Secondary Video Only

Formatting to this selection will only display the secondary video source of your session.

4.) Picture in Picture

This format will always display the primary video feed in the bottom right corner of the podcast, displaying the screen capture feed as the main view of this session. The primary view, unlike Mixed video, will not switch back and forth after 60 seconds of slide inactivity.

5.) Side by Side

Side by side plays a stream in the primary view of the podcast, with a separate feed in the top right of the view. Screen capture will take precedence over the primary video source as the main feed available. it is similar to the picture in picture view.

6.)Tile All Streams

The preferred podcast type for viewing on iOS devices. Tile All Streams does *not* show powerpoint slides. However, the view will accept and display up to three other secondary sources at once. This podcast feature adapts to the current amount of streams available. For instance, one feed will take up the entire window. Two video sources will split the view in half, with one stream on each side. Adding a third source will yet again split the view so that all three are spread evenly, and likewise, a fourth stream will completely fill the window.

Step 5.)

Click the bottom drop down menu and select the desired quality.

SD480pLow: 720×480, Frame Rate: 15fps, Video Bit Rate: 250000 bit/s, Audio Bit rate 64000 bit/s

SD480pMedium: 720×480, Frame Rate: 30fps, Video Bit Rate: 500000 bit/s, Audio Bit rate 64000 bit/s

SD480pHigh: 720×480, Frame Rate: 30fps, Video Bit Rate: 750000 bit/s, Audio Bit rate 64000 bit/s

HD720p: 1040×768, Frame Rate: 15fps, Video Bit Rate: 960000 bit/s, Audio Bit rate 96000 bit/s

HD1080: 1920×1080, Frame Rate 30fps, Video Bit Rate: 960000 bit/s, Audio Bit rate 96000 bit/s

Please note that you can change the default podcast quality by using the System setting “DefaultPodcastPreset”

7.) Now, click on the “Encode” tab. Uncheck “video”

8.) Finally, click “Encode” in the bottom left.

*If you run into any errors while encoding, this may point to corrupt audio samples. This file will not process if this occurs.

10.) Use the newly encoded file and upload via unison.

4. Windows Recorder on a USB Driver

InformationThis feature allows you to run the Panopto Windows Recorder from a USB drive.

This means that you do not have to install the Recorder to create a recording. This is useful for customers that have the scenario of guest presenters that do not want to install the Recorder or if you ever want to run the Recorder but may not have permission on that machine to install software.

Panopto only supports USB/eSATA external hard drives. Using USB Flash drives may work but due to inconsistent results in testing, they are not recommended.

To use this feature, login with an account that has creator rights and click the “Download Recorder” link on your Panopto site. You will see an option to download the “Panopto Recorder Live-On-USB Package”.

Right click on PanoptoRecorderNoInstallation.zip and select “Extract All”

Choose your USB/eSATA hard drive (E:\PanoptoRecorderNoInstallation in this example)

Run Recorder.exe

Enter the Panopto server URL (no http://)  – click Apply and log in.

4. Smooth Stream Capture/broadcast – BETA

InformationSmooth Stream allows you to create multiple bitrate files (standard, high, and ultra) on the client machine during recording (.isma/.ismv files as opposed to .wmv).

Smooth Stream also allows you to webcast over port 80 (where .wmv uses 8080 for webcast) and provides advanced capabilities for broadcasts (viewers can pause and rewind live recordings).

To enable this in your Panopto Windows Recorder

Note: This feature is currently in BETA

Click the Settings tab – Advanced Settings

Check box for “Use Adaptive Streaming capture format (BETA)”

smoothstream2

Click Create New Recording to create a session using Smooth Stream.

To see the resolutions and bitrates that Smooth Stream captures at, see our documentation here.

2. Determining What Quality to Live Broadcast

InformationThis Quickguide will help you determine the best setting for broadcasting live.

How to find your upload speed

Go to speedtest.net

Click Begin Test this will capture your download and upload speeds as seen in the red box below.

Armed with this information you can determine what quality your bandwidth can stream. Panopto allows you to choose from a variety of quality to meet your bandwidth requirements.

For broadcasting we are concerned with the upload speed. With the example above it would be 8.43 Mbps.

Quality and Stream Settings

The quality and amount of streams that you record will determine the amount of bandwidth required to stream a session.

Standard Quality:
Audio Only – 48 kbps
Video and Audio – 298 kbps
Video, Audio, and Secondary Video – 548 kbps

High Quality:
Audio Only – 128 kbps
Video and Audio – 1128 kbps
Video, Audio, and Secondary Video – 2196 kbps

Ultra Quality:
Audio Only – 128 kbps
Video and Audio – 1628 kbps
Video, Audio, and Secondary Video – 2628

The use of Smooth Stream will also allow you to stream adatively, meaning that the bitrate of the file depends on the users connection to the server. For example, a High quality recording with Video, Audio, and Secondary Video will stream anywhere from 264 kbps to 2064kbps. For a more in depth explaination of Smooth Stream click here.

How to change Recording quality

To record in SmoothStream(BETA) go to settings in the recorder.

Disclaimer: SmoothStream is currently in the BETA stage and is not fully supported.

To choose the quality of the primary stream click the Create New Recording tab then select the radio button shown below.

To choose the settings of the secondary stream you can adjust the sliders shown in the red box below.

Please note: If using a capture card to record output from a camera source, it is recommended to use at least 44.1 kHz sampling rate output on the recording device to ensure maximum quality and compatibility.
