Course Description: This course will assist in understanding effective content-based teaching in a pluralistic, multilingual society.  An understanding of socio-linguists and second language acquisition will frame an analysis of curriculum, materials, instructional strategies, assessments and classroom management. Course Description:  American Literary Realism: This course will critically engage the ongoing debate about the nature and value of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American fiction.  Well into the twentieth century, the academic study of literature in English was focused on British authors and the value of literature written in the U.S. was far from established.  Eventually, the study of realism and naturalism would become central to the identity of an America emerging as a world power.  The debates surrounding the definition of American literature involve literary questions of canon formation, political questions surrounding America¿s global position in the twentieth century, and questions about American identity (especially as regards race, gender, and class).  In this course students will use primary texts to develop a research project on the disciplinary development of American literature and American studies. Course Description: This course combines a content area teaching methods lab with a practicum in secondary education. The class requires extensive field experiences and portions of the course will be taught in a high school setting where Butler students will experience secondary content specific methods modeled by veteran classroom teachers (Taken from my.butler course description)

Standards Reflection

IMG_0824This is a mind map of the Education Council for Teachers of English Standards. According to the Standards, it is essential to present students with a wide variety of literature. That means subjecting them to literature of different genres, time periods, cultures, and even different medias such as music or movies. Another important aspect of the standards deals with what we teach students to do with all of these different types of literature. Teachers need to teach students to read, write, listen, speak with purpose, but also to apply those tools to their everyday lives. The tools we as English teachers are responsible for teaching students are listed underneath the umbrella in my mind map. Students have to learn how to ask deep questions and formulate answers that are clear, critical, creative and strategic.
It is also necessary to address the nature of English. English is a spiraling education which means that students are learning to do the same things over and over again in each class with increasing difficulty. So each year students learn to write essays, narratives, discuss literature, etc, etc, but they learn to write with more technique and discuss themes with more succinct terms.
