SGA Assembly Passes Constitution Changes to Transition to a Student Senate Model

The Student Government Association Assembly, on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, approved constitutional amendments proposed jointly by 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 SGA leadership. With an affirming vote of over the two-thirds majority required, these amendments serve as a directive to adjust the legislative body of SGA from the current Assembly model to transition into a Senate model.

SGA Scholarship Winners Announced

Student Government Association’s 14th Annual Scholarship competition has concluded, with seven winners selected. The annual scholarship program is intended to reward students who actively participate in campus life and demonstrate qualities that promote the mission and spirit of Butler University.

SGA Assembly Passes Budget Proposal to Fund Campus Improvement Projects

The Student Government Association Assembly approved the SGA rollover budget proposal. This resolution will use built-up funds from the SGA budget to spur three campus improvement projects. These projects include: new water filtration stations, expanded key card access for academic spaces, and allowing for 24-hour Starbucks access through the installation of a security gate.

“By focusing on these three areas we are able to emphasize sustainability efforts as well as expanding the access of campus soft and study space,” said SGA Vice President of Administration Austin Del Priore.

SGA Assembly Passes Resolution Endorsing “Fair Trade Campaign”

During their weekly meeting on Wednesday, April 8th, the Student Government Association Assembly unanimously passed a resolution supporting the “Fair Trade Campaign” at Butler University.

By passing the resolution, SGA supports Fair Trade initiatives as an effective way to put into practice the principles of social justice and environmental sustainability. By becoming a Fair Trade University, Butler University will demonstrate a commitment to sustainability, and we hope will inspire other institutions and organizations to support Fair Trade in their respective areas.

SGA Assembly Passes Resolution Supporting the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act

During their weekly meeting on Wednesday, March 25th, the Student Government Association Assembly passed a resolution supporting the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (CHIA).

The act would eliminate a distinction in existing tax law that would result in allowing tax-exempt charitable and educational organizations to make grants to non-University owned not-for-profit student housing entities that provide collegiate student housing. In doing so, the act would allow student housing to be safer and more affordable, at no cost to taxpayers.

SGA Announces 14th Annual Scholarship Application

Student Government Association (SGA) is excited to announce its 14th annual scholarship competition. This program is intended to reward those students who actively participate in campus life and demonstrate qualities that promote the mission and spirit of Butler University.

All Butler students meeting the following criteria are eligible to apply:

Full-time Butler University who will be a full-time Butler student for a 2015-2016 academic year
Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

SGA Assembly Passes Resolution Supporting Jury Duty Deferment for Indiana Resident Students

During their weekly meeting on Wednesday, March 4, the Student Government Association Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the rules of the Indiana Supreme Court to be amended to include a deferment option that would allow an Indiana resident full-time university student summoned for jury duty to defer their service until the close of the current academic year.

The Indiana Jury Rules, as maintained by the Indiana State Supreme Court, do not currently contain a provision providing full-time university students a flexible jury duty deferment option.

Student Government Association (SGA) regrets the Butler Connection post that incorrectly associated the showing of the film “The Help” with a “celebration” of Black History Month. This use of language was a mistake, and we apologize for any confusion or frustration that may have been caused. SGA is committed to programming that ensures inclusivity for all of the students we represent.
