I am (currently) a sophomore at Butler University, majoring in exercise science and serve as a personal trainer here at the HRC. Although I consider fitness a huge part of my life currently, I cannot always say that was the case. As a young child, I struggled with my weight and dreaded gym class, never participating unless forced. It was not until I got involved in middle school that I began my journey with sports (volleyball, basketball and track). I became very familiar with the bench and sometimes the only position I could earn was “manager,” but I knew someday I would earn the title “athlete.” After a few years (and much more practice), I progressed, particularly in volleyball. In high school I maintained my position as lebaro and discovered a love for tennis. In between seasons, I started running and working out on my own. After I saw I could actually get somewhere, I found myself more intrinsically motivated, making my own promise to stay active every day for my 2010 New Year’s Resolution. The promise stuck and is now no longer just a mantra, but a part of my everyday life. So many opportunities came with living in this “fit world,” including becoming a staff member at the HRC, a part-time tennis coach for my hometown high school, and attending the 2012 NIRSA conference. The people I have met along the way continue to inspire me, and I look forward to meeting more who share a similar passion.
