My Own Little Challenge

As I told you guys earlier, I’m in a bit of a gray area right now.  I have come a long way since injury, but I am still struggling with my runs a little bit and I cannot wait for it to feel more natural again.  I enjoy it so much, but my muscles are still stiff and my body can’t do what it used to be able to do just yet.  I find myself frustrated, but I know the only direction to go is forward.  So, to help me with that I have found a training program to help me get back in the swing of things.  If you’re a runner, you know the need for “structure.”  However, this program will be different; I do plan on pushing myself, but I probably will need more days off than this plan prescribes.  Only time will tell — I just need to listen to my body.  All this plan is is a guideline.  So if I don’t feel like running one day or if I want to do a different workout, I will.  Yes, I want to become a better runner, but this is more about easing back into consistent physical activity.  I found this Hal Higdon training program online.  I chose the Novice 2 Program  for a half marathon because I have done a half marathon before, but I’m not really interesting in breaking a PR right now (which is what the intermediate level is designed for).

Higdon is famous for his programs, and has transformed leisurely walkers into marathon runners.  Although I’m not looking for any drastic changes, I am excited to try his program and see how far I can go.  What I particularly like about this program is that it allows two days of rest and a day dedicated to completely cross training per week.  I’m thinking hopefully I’ll be able to add in some 30-45 minute strength training sessions in there maybe two to three times a week too.  Take a look at the schedule below.  Feel free to follow along and report back to me how you’re doing!  I’m going to try my best to document my runs — partly to hold me accountable, partly to document my experiences as a runner making a comeback.  Leggo.
